NHL 2009-2010 Season Preview
Cheston 10/7/2009
Last season was one without a lot of drama. It was a repeat for Alexander Ovechkin for the MVP and it was a finals rematch of Pittsburgh vs. Detroit. This season, things should work out a little differently.

Art Ross Trophy: NHL Scoring Leader
Last seasons winner: Evgeni Malkin
This season: Alexander Ovechkin
Last season Ovechkin narrowly missed out on sweeping both the Hart and Ross trophies. This season he ups his scoring while Malkin's dips with players around him stepping up.

Hart Memorial Trophy: MVP

This season: Alexander Ovechkin
Ovechkin has dominated the NHL the past two seasons, and the scary thing is that he is only getting better. Couple that with an improving Washington Capitals team and that should mean Three-Peat.

James Norris Memorial Trophy: Top Defensemen
Last seasons winner: Zdeno Chara
This season: Chris Pronger
Pronger was a huge addition for an up-and-coming Philadelphia team. He should have an outstanding season anchoring this already strong defense.

Vezina Trophy: Top goaltender
Last seasons winner: Tim Thomas
This season: Martin Brodeur
Last season all that kept Brodeur from receiving this honor was a lengthy stint of the injured list and an outstanding season by Thomas. If Brodeur can stay healthy then he will run away with this award and New Jersey will be back in the playoffs.

Frank J. Selke Trophy: Defensive forward
Last seasons winner: Pavel Datsyuk
This season: Pavel Datsyuk
Although he has lost a step, Datsyuk is still a dominating defender and Detroit is still a great team.

Calder Memorial Trophy: Rookie of the Year
Last seasons winner: Steve Mason
This season: Jonas Gustavsson
This guy looks like he will give an immediate lift to the Maple Leafs and make them a playoff team.

Jack Adams Award: Top coach
Last seasons winner: Claude Julien
This season: Andy Murray
Last season Murray turned this team around and snuck into the playoffs. This year there will be no sneaking because the Blues should be good all season.

Stanley Cup
Washington Capitals v. Chicago Blackhawks
Marian Hossa will have to set some sort of record when he reaches his third straight Stanley Cup with three different teams. Unfortunately for him that will result in an 0-3 record. While Chicago is a deep team up front and on defense Cristobal Huet is too much of a liability. The same can be said for Jose Theodore but I think that Semyon Varlamov will be the net minder come playoff time. With him a year older, the Caps can take the step to the next level that Pittsburgh was able to last season.
